Neil Wilson is a freelance writer and photographer based in Perthshire, Scotland. Since 1988 he has authored more than 100 travel and walking guidebooks for various publishers, including Lonely Planet, AA Publishing, Berlitz, Jarrold and HarperCollins.
In recent years Neil has worked mainly on the Lonely Planet guides to Scotland and Ireland, including the pocket guides to Glasgow, Edinburgh and Dublin, and a new guide called Journey: North Coast 500 (published in 2025). He has also written for websites, newspapers, magazines and a whole range of other clients, and shot location videos for LP.
Neil is also a qualified fly fishing guide and instructor working with Fishinguide Scotland.
Currently working on: Lonely Planet Scotland, 14th edition, March-July 2026. Updating the following chapters: Central Scotland (Stirling, Perth, Fife), Northeast Scotland (Dundee, Angus, Aberdeen, Moray), Inverness & the Central Highlands (including Cairngorms, Glen Affric, Loch Ness, Highland Perthshire, Glen Coe, Fort William, Ardnamurchan, the Small Isles). Also the introductory chapters.
